Australia’s Defence estate spans air, land, and sea across every state and territory. It’s a broad and operationally unique environment with its own independent framework for environmental management, separate from other Commonwealth and state jurisdictions.

The scale and diversity of this estate is matched by the complexity of its environmental challenges: legacy contamination from decades of operational activity, sensitive ecological values on and adjacent to Defence land, and an ongoing requirement to balance environmental obligation with uncompromised operational readiness. Sustainable environmental management is not peripheral to Defence capability — it is a critical enabler of it.

Working effectively within the Defence sector demands more than technical expertise. It requires a deep understanding of the security protocols, operational constraints, and risk environment that are constant features of Defence engagement — both in high-security physical settings and sensitive digital environments. It also requires an appreciation of the unique procurement landscape, the role of the Defence Estate and Infrastructure Group, and the relationships between Defence, its managing contractors, and the specialist subconsultants who support them. Advisors who lack this contextual fluency create risk; those who possess it create value.

Western Environmental is a Defence-ready organisation with an extensive track record of delivery across the sector. We are members of the Defence Industry Security Program (DISP), and our staff hold the requisite security clearances and credentials to operate across the full spectrum of Defence environments — from active bases and training areas to former Defence land undergoing remediation and transition. Our national footprint enables us to support large-scale, geographically distributed work programs with consistent technical rigour, and our experience working alongside major Defence managing contractors gives us a practical understanding of how work is scoped, procured, and delivered in this environment.

Our technical capabilities span PFAS assessment and management, complex remediation, specialist technical advisory, litigation support and audit, and approvals and compliance. Whether supporting the Department of Defence directly on a major environmental investigation, providing independent audit or litigation support in a contested matter, or embedded within a managing contractor’s delivery team, Western Environmental brings the same standard of technical excellence and security-conscious professionalism that the sector demands. That combination of capability, credibility, and Defence-specific fluency is what makes us a trusted strategic advisor across one of Australia’s most demanding and consequential operating environments.

Sites were located in regional and remote areas and were substantial in size, requiring the mobilisation of large field teams and the implementation of diligent project management procedures to secure access and approvals.
