Multidisciplinary Environmental Services

Western Environmental offers a broad range of multidisciplinary and complementary environmental services delivered either through our in-house technical teams or via carefully selected external collaborative partnerships. The latter are of particular strategic importance in disciplines where deep jurisdictional, geographic, or technical specialisation is required. Rather than maintaining a roster of generalists, we assemble best-for-project teams that leverage the most capable and relevant technical professionals available; an approach that consistently produces superior project outcomes for our clients.

Acid Sulfate Soils

Acid sulfate soils present significant risks when disturbed — acidification, soil and groundwater contamination, and land use constraints can result from excavation and dewatering activities that are not properly managed. While management processes are well established, appropriate characterisation and risk assessment is essential to achieving cost-effective and environmentally sound outcomes.

Our in-house ASS specialists have extensive experience across large-scale excavation, linear infrastructure, and basement development projects — and our complementary contracting and treatment capability means we can devise and implement practical solutions for soil and water generated during construction.

Key Services

  • Site investigations — soil, groundwater, and sediment testing and interpretation
  • ASS and groundwater investigation reports and management plans
  • Dewatering, drawdown impact and hydrogeological modelling
  • Soil and dewatering treatment design, modelling and cost estimation
  • Compliance monitoring, testing, and closure reporting
  • Regulator liaison and approvals

Asbestos & Hazardous Materials

Asbestos and hazardous building materials present distinct risks in existing structures, historic utilities, and contaminated soils — each requiring a site-specific assessment and management approach. Our in-house team of Licensed Asbestos Assessors and experienced practitioners hold nationally recognised accreditations and are equipped to deliver all asbestos-related assessment and management projects swiftly and competently.

Beyond asbestos, our in-house staff are experienced in the assessment, planning, and management of non-asbestos hazardous building materials including heavy metals, organic and inorganic compounds, and gases, ensuring our clients avoid the regulatory, financial, and reputational consequences of poor hazardous materials management.

Key Services

  • Asbestos in soil investigations, management, and remediation
  • Asbestos and hazardous materials surveys — buildings and infrastructure
  • Asset Retirement and Decommissioning Hazardous Materials Support
  • Airborne asbestos fibre monitoring — baseline and compliance
  • Asbestos and hazmat registers and management plans
  • Asbestos removal specifications, control plans, and safe work method statements
  • Management and procurement of asbestos removal contractors
  • Clearance inspections and certification

Bushfire Risk Management

Bushfire assessment frameworks are constantly evolving — varying by state and changing project by project — and accredited practitioners are few. Leveraging a range of external collaborative partnerships to access practitioners accredited to Bushfire Planning and Design (BPAD) Level 3, we offer a deep, responsive and geographically diverse bushfire risk management capability.

Our teams work closely with regulators, emergency services, and government departments to provide reliable, cutting-edge advice that guides clients through the process efficiently and cost-effectively. We understand the risks — not only those associated with bushfire itself, but the program and commercial risks to our clients from delays and outcomes that fall short of regulatory requirements.

Key Services

  • Bushfire strategic advice, planning, and risk management
  • Bushfire hazard level assessments
  • Bushfire attack level (BAL) assessments
  • Bushfire management plans
  • Emergency evacuation and emergency response plans
  • Bushfire building construction design advice
  • Compliance assessments
  • Site-specific fuel measurement and fuel management plans
  • Community consultation, education, and awareness

Climate Change & ESG

Effective climate action begins with understanding — of an organisation’s emissions profile, its exposure to physical and transition climate risks, and the expectations of investors, regulators, and communities.

We leverage a highly skilled, multi-disciplinary external team of experts drawn from across Australia and internationally, to ensure our Clients benefit from a range of perspectives and technical skillsets given the rapid rate of change in legislation, regulation and best practice in the industry globally. We recognise that meaningful progress requires embedding climate thinking into organisational systems and culture, not just producing a strategy document, and we work with clients to make that transition practically and enduringly.

Key Services

  • Climate change strategy development and implementation
  • Carbon accounting and emissions footprinting
  • Emissions reduction planning
  • Sustainability benchmarking and assessment
  • Climate risk assessment and adaptation planning
  • Climate resilience workshops
  • Urban forest strategy development
  • Change management and embedding climate action within organisational systems

Ecology & Biodiversity

This is where our collaborative partnerships offer significant value to our Clients and Projects. By leveraging external ecology and biodiversity technical experts across a number of best-in-class partner consultants we assemble best-for-project teams with the precise expertise each engagement demands, ensuring surveys meet regulatory requirements and support project approvals under both state and Commonwealth legislation.

  • Targeted surveys for threatened and priority flora
  • Vegetation community and condition mapping and statistical analysis
  • Vegetation and rehabilitation management plans
  • Fauna surveys — basic and detailed
